Australia has a lot of pretty amazing cities, each with their own personality, features, and hidden gems. So we understand why international students hoping to come to Australia can feel a bit overwhelmed when it comes to choosing where to start their new lives. To help, we at Spiible have created, lets call them city profiles, for each of the major cities, to help you choose which city is for you. We hope this makes the decision a little bit easier!
If you love fast-paced city living, spending your afternoons in cafes and rooftop bars, and your weekends watching the sport with your mates, then let me introduce you to Melbourne! I am a born and raised Melbournian, having lived here for most of my life, and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Just like any city, Melbourne is not for everyone. But if you are anything like me, you will fall in love with my city.
Melbourne is a bustling metropolitan city, surrounded by leafy suburbs and hip neighbourhoods. While we are quite large, with a population of just over 4 million (slightly less than Sydney), the city’s public transport system in incredible. As a student without a car, you would have no trouble exploring every corner of the city (not to mention our free trams in the city!).
When you are looking to spend a fun afternoon or evening with friends, Melbourne can offer you an ever-growing amount of things to do. We are the sports-capital of Australia, so there is always a sport in season with a game to see. Melbourne has some of the most amazing places to eat and drink; from our famous Melbourne-style brunch on a Sunday night, to sipping cocktails on a rooftop bar, you’ll want to dine your way through the city (I have been doing so for years!).
Also, in my opinion, Melbourne is so incredibly cultured. There always seems to always be some sort of festival happening—comedy festivals, film festivals, fashion festivals, music festivals, arts festivals, cultural festivals—you will never run out of things to do! In fact, over a quarter of the state’s population was born overseas in more than 200 countries.
Explore the city and you will see busy people taking a break from their busy lives, sipping flat whites in little hidden cafes, and I think this the perfect representation for the city of Melbourne. While it is the fast-paced, bustling city, look a little deeper and you will notice its calming atmosphere and opportunities for a perfect day out with friends. It’s the calm hidden within the crazy.
It’s no accident that Melbourne is constantly awarded the world’s most liveable city, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. If you are an urban traveller looking for a hip, Aussie lifestyle in a big city, then Melbourne is just for you.
