Weather talk: Choosing and Preparing for your study destination

Believe it or not, Australia is such a large land that we experience different climates between and even within states or territories. Unfortunately, some people may overlook this when choosing their study destination or forget about it when they’re packing for their journey, so their dream study experience turns into a nightmare! Imagine packing jumpers for your Winter study trip to Darwin because you were expecting cold weather. Your body won’t appreciate the heat at all! In this article, we talk about seasons and climate in Australia so that all prospective visitors know what they’re getting themselves into and can prepare accordingly.

Seasons
Firstly, Australia experiences four seasons. Within each season, the climate falls into combinations of temperature and rainfall. The weather tends to be coolest in Winter and hottest in Summer, while Autumn and Spring experiences milder coldness and hot weather, respectively.
  • Summer (December – February),
  • Autumn (March-May),
  • Winter (June-August)
  • Spring (September-November)

Australian Climate Zones
Australia has six climatic zones. In the map from the Bureau of Metereorology (below),  we can see that the climatic zones are almost geographically horizontal in nature. The climate transitions from being hottest in the north to coldest in a south-easterly direction. Climate changes occur within each state! Take a look at your study destination to see what you will be facing.
Australian Rainfall Zones
Looking at the map of major seasonal rainfall zones in Australia from the Bureau of Meteorology, rainfall zones in Australia appear to be quite scattered and sporadic. For example, rainfall does not increase while travelling upwards or downwards or from left to right or vice versa. Importantly, central Australia appears to be dry and disrupts the pattern. Australia appears to experience more rainfall in the north, along the eastern coastline and in the south-east coast around Perth.

Do I need t-shirts or jumpers, or maybe an umbrella ?

Things to remember
  • Darwin is hot throughout the year with little variation in temperature between the hotter (Summer and Spring) and colder months (Winter and Autumn), so always be prepared for heat.
  • The coldest temperature in Australia occurs in Canberra in Winter you guys need to remember to pack warm clothes the most!
  • Australia has a low average rainfall with higher falls occurring in the north.
  • In Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney, the rainfall tends to be similar throughout the year. However, Darwin experiences the greatest rainfall during summer, and Perth experiences its least rainfall at the same time!
  • Generally,  temperature-wise, it is hot in the north, and colder in the south-east side of Australia. However, the rainfall is sporadic across Australia so make sure you look at your study destination specifically so you know what to prepare for!
