Writing a Standout Cover Letter

We’ve all been asked to submit a cover letter alongside our resume for a job, and it can be a breaking point for employers considering your application. Your cover letter is the first glance an employer gets at your personality, your skillset and what you could provide to their business.
When applying for jobs, consider the goals of the company/restaurant/store you’re applying for first and foremost and think about how your skills could help improve their business. Remember, your cover letter is your chance to stand out from your competition by selling your unique skills and explaining how your experiences have equipped you for the position.
Here are a few tips for writing your cover letter. There are three things you absolutely need to focus on: the employer, you and the company.
To introduce yourself, use key descriptive, such as “enthusiastic” and “passionate”. It’s also important to mention the things you “admire” or are “inspired by” in relation to the employer, to demonstrate that you have done your research and are serious about the position. The employer reading your application is a busy person, so you need to prove that you are worth their time. This comes through clearly in the cover letter.
The skills you mention will vary depending on the type of job you are applying for, but communication skills, customer relations, multi-tasking and problem solving skills are all well-regarded, especially for those beginning their time in the work force. Don’t discount your personal attributes just because you don’t have experience in the exact field where you are applying for a job; everyone has to start somewhere! Instead, think about the experiences you have had, and think about how these could help you in a work environment.
Finally, make sure you include active verbs that keep the employer interested. For example, use words such as “led”, “achieved” and “identified” to describe your past successes. Employers want to hear that you are a go-getter, so make sure they know just how great you are!
If you keep all these things in mind when you apply for different positions, you’ll snatch up a job in no time!
